Success – 1. The favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors; the accomplishment of one’s goals. 2. The attainment of wealth, position, honors, or the like.

The concept of success is one of the most scrutinized and debated topics today.  Therefore, I encourage you to focus on what success means to YOU. Success to the manager within a Fortune 500 company could mean that their team reaches performance goals and they secure a $5K bonus. While success to the small business owner might mean attaining two new clients at $5K each.

The keys to success are very similar regardless of your goals.

The traits of high achieving executives and professionals I see in career coaching clients and business coaching clients are almost the same. When people are struggling in some aspect of their lives, there tends to be similarities as well. A lot of people are looking for a quick fix to their problems, so they just want to hear the one tactic, strategy, or affirmation that’s going to put them over the top.

The key to success that no one talks about is resilience!

It’s much cooler (and easier) to sell someone a product, system, or service that doesn’t question how the buyer is showing up. One of the best books I’ve read on this topic is Prosilience: Building Your Resilience for a Turbulent World by Dr. Linda Hoopes.  In it, she describes how being proactive and having resilience gives you “prosilience.”  This attitude is a non-negotiable when it comes to creating the success you desire.  Having all of the tactics, strategy, and affirmations will not help, if you don’t have the mental fortitude to keep going.

Let’s say you’re in the process of an urgent job search.  Getting a strong resume is an important aspect of marketing yourself, but just submitting the resume is not enough.  Resilience will keep you going when you’ve applied for thirty jobs and haven’t heard anything back.  Resilience is the key to success that will keep you going when you’ve gone on three interviews and find out that the company chose another candidate.

What have you done in the last thirty days to help build your resilience level?  If you’ve stayed in your comfort zone and haven’t tried anything new, the odds are not much.  If you consider yourself to be an ambitious person, then I encourage you to think about doing something that puts you on the path to reach goal (even if it’s a little scary).  Maybe you pick up the phone and call a few recruiting firms during your job search.  Or you attend a networking event where you don’t know anyone.

Putting yourself out there over time will also help to develop your confidence and leadership skills.  These intangibles are necessary on your path to achieve success.  In the past, I’ve helped clients create plans and strategies to get what they want, only to have the client realize they “aren’t ready for it.”  That’s completely normal, if you haven’t stretched your resilience muscle.  Having the right support system, which might include a coach or mentor, can assist you along the way.

Has a lack of resilience ever stopped you in the past?

Perhaps it showed up as procrastination, fear, or outright avoidance.  Did you let it influence you, or did you eventually move through any resistance you had?  Most of us aren’t born with an affinity for rejection or hearing the word “no.”  Proactively building your resilience is vital to overall happiness, satisfaction, and success.
