What lights you up inside?  What can you spend hours doing that doesn’t feel like work?  Now, how do you feel about your current job?  If its easier for you, use a satisfaction scale of 1 (least satisfied) – 10 (most satisfied).  Really think about it and decide if that number is how you want to rate your life.  Career coaching can help you pick a career, increase your productivity, and get a promotion.  Reaching your potential in a career influences everything from your bank account to your level of happiness.

If you aren’t energized coming into the office every morning, ask yourself  ‘Is this something fulfilling that I want to do for the next 20 years?’  If the answer is no, what have you done about it?  Talking to your friends and family can be helpful to get things off of your chest, but have you taken any action?  Have you done any research?  Do you know your strengths, weaknesses, and how they can be used in your favor to be effective and make more money?  Career coaching focuses on taking you and your career where you want to be.  Read on for three keys to picking a career.

Discover what you are passionate about!

If you follow this blog, you know that I talk a lot about passion, because it is what keeps you going when you are tired and ready to quit.  We’ve all seen how the majority of executives and professionals are just going through the motions at work, on auto-pilot.  Living for the weekends and vacations, isn’t living.  That’s just getting by until you allow yourself to be happy or excited.  What are your desires?  What did you dream about doing as a kid?  If you are unsure, going deep into your past and your thoughts can help you discover your passion.

What are you good at?

Make a list of your talents, consider what people compliment you on.  Write down things that come easy to you.  What do others ask you for help with or your opinion on?  We all have things that we are naturally good at; it’s important to highlight and nurture those skills.  Are you passionate about any of the things on your list?  Do you feel a strong sense of purpose to complete any of them?  It might be helpful to ask a few people to make a short list of the things you are good at.  Can you find any patterns?

Consider education and prerequisites necessary for your top career.

Your top career choices should be revealing themselves from the previous steps.  What would you want to focus your energy towards?  How much time are you willing to devote to your career choice?  If you are passionate about law, good at debating, but unwilling to commit to the years needed for law school, being a lawyer might not be for you.  Career coaching helps you get clear on the timetables of education for different professions and finding the right fit.

Picking a career can be a process filled with self-discovery.  Or it can be stressful journey through trial and error.  Career coaching can help save time, save money, and shorten your learning curve.  The payoff for finding your ideal career can be financially and personally rewarding.  If discovering the career meant for you is important, contact us for a FREE Vision of Success Session!
